2 2021 105461 AREA ATTRACTIONS A R E A A T T R A C T I O N S AREA ATTRACTIONS Arlington Hang on to your hat! Arlington has been called one of the windiest places in North America, which makes it a logical place to install the largest wind farm outside of California. This small outpost near the eastern border of Carbon County still displays many buildings from its early days. Baggs Bordering Colorado as it does, the Valley was host to many an outlaw riding hard to elude justice. The Gaddis Matthews House, in the center of town, was started as a cabin to be used as a hideout by Butch Cassidy and his gang. Baggs is the gateway to the Red Desert, a land of wild horses, roaming antelope, and red-tail hawks. This is the largest area of unfenced land in the lower forty-eight states. Dixon As the host city of the Little Snake River Valley Rodeo, Dixon has never strayed far from its western roots. The Dixon Town Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Elk Mountain Lying in the shadow of its 11,156-foot namesake in eastern Carbon County, Elk Mountain is a quiet, picturesque community on the banks of the Medicine Bow River. Encampment Located in south-central Carbon County, Encampment began life as the quiet settlement of Grand Encampment, then boomed as copper was discovered in the Sierra Madre mountains to the west. Now it is back to its origins as a quiet community. Hanna The mining town of Hanna is located northeast of Rawlins in the center of one of Wyoming’s largest and richest coal fields. Monuments stand in Hanna to commemorate those who died in explosions here in 1903 and 1908, and in other mining accidents. The Hanna Basin Museum hosts artifacts that tell the tale of this small community. Little Snake River Valley Resting quietly between the desolate beauty of the Red Desert to the west, and the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains to the east, the Little Snake River Valley at the southern border of Carbon County is one of the most isolated places in Wyoming. Opportunities for hunting, fishing and camping are abundant in the Valley. Medicine Bow Medicine Bow was founded in 1869 as a railroad water station, but was made famous in Owen Wister’s western novel “The Virginian.” Built in 1909, the Virginian Hotel continues to welcome guests. Rawlins Rawlins, the county seat of Carbon County, is a community of 9100 people, located on Interstate 80. While in Rawlins, you can tour a number of museums. North of Rawlins is a noted geological feature known as The Uplift. A thrustfaulted anticline, this unique formation consists of stratified layers, some of which contain exposed fossilized remains of countless species of prehistoric plants and animals. Riverside It’s all about the Encampment River in Riverside. Cross the highway from Encampment to come for the fishing, rafting, kayaking! Travel a short distance outside of town to see the Indian Bathtubs, bowl-shaped rock formations that, when filled with water, become natural bathtubs. Saratoga The Good Times Valley sits southeast of Rawlins, between the Snowy Range and the Medicine Bow National Forest/ Sierra Madre Range. Relatively unknown, Saratoga retains its unspoiled charm and western heritage. While touring the center of town, stop in at the historic Wolf Hotel. Savery Among the landmarks in Savery is the Little Snake River Valley Museum. The cabin and store of original settler Jim Baker is a centerpiece of this extensive and charming museum. Sinclair Originally called Parco, Sinclair was named after the company that built it. The town came into being almost overnight in 1923, when the Producer’s Oil & Refining Co. constructed a refinery. Along with the refinery, the company also built and owned all the stores, shops, community buildings, and houses. In 1943 the Sinclair Oil Company bought the refinery and all its holdings, including the town itself.
