6 2023 083164 A R E A A T T R A C T I O N S AREA ATTRACTIONS AREA ATTRACTIONS First Fatality of the Great Migration 307-358-2950 Joel Hembree from Tennessee, died at the age of 6 years old by “falling off the wagon tongue and the wagon rolling over him.” On July 18 between Bed Tick and La Prele Creek, the young boy was documented to be the first death of the 1843 migration on the Oregon Trail. Not open to the public. Fort Fetterman 307-358-2864 State Historic Site. The fort is an old army outpost built in the 1800’s during the Indian uprisings. Some of the old buildings have been restored. The fort is located eight miles northwest of Douglas on State Highway 93. Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, with activities on the 4th of July - pancake breakfast, living history displays, etc. Glendo State Park 307-735-4433 This state-operated park is located southeast of Douglas off of Interstate 25 and offers 12,500 acres of clear, unpolluted waters to the boater, fisherman, water skier and swimmer. Glendo State Park boasts beautiful improved campgrounds, a full service marina, and miles of white, sandy beaches. Glenrock Deer Creek Historical Museum 935 W. Birch St (Highway 20-26) 307-436-2810 The building housing this museum was formerly the church of Our Redeemer Lutheran. It was moved from Kinnear, Wyoming to its present location in 1976. The museum displays articles and artifacts from the pre-history of the Indians through the immigration days on the Oregon-California Trail and early settlement. The cattle industry, mining and oil played a large part in the development of Wyoming, which is also represented. The museum is a free museum and is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm every day except Sunday and Monday, from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and is handicapped accessible. Glenrock Dinosaur Museum & Dr. Robert T. Bakker Education Center provides the community with a trip into the dinosaur age of our area with Lady Stephanie at the helm. Lady Stephanie is a Triceratops that was discovered 5 miles north of Glenrock in 1994. She is the ‘first-lady’ of the local museum and an attraction not to be missed. The museum is concerned with the process of cleaning, preparing and exhibiting fossil remains. Displays include not only numerous Wyoming dinosaurs, but also fossilized mammals, small reptiles, and fish from several unique, one-of-a-kind fossils housed at the museum that makes it a destination for many travelers. In addition to the material museum, the “Paleon” is one of the few facilities where visitors can walk through the preparation lab to see the fossils being cleaned, repaired, and assembled. Visitors can also see the process of making casts of important specimens which are used for research at other institutions. Questions are welcome!! Jackalope Square 307-358-2950 The town of Douglas is known as the “Home of the Jackalope.” The square is open year round for family pictures with this statue of the Jackalope. Laramie Peak/Medicine Bow National Forest/Esterbrook Located 22 miles from Douglas 307-358-4690 Laramie Peak is located in the breathtaking Medicine Bow National Forest in southern Converse County. The peak still stands as a landmark to the traveler, just as it did for the pioneers of the 1800’s. Esterbrook offers camping, fishing, rock climbing, backpacking, snowmobiling and crosscountry skiing. Medicine Bow National Forest is a popular hunting location for sportsmen. LaBonte Hotel 206 Walnut St, Douglas • 307-358-4343 Named for the first settler in Converse County, the hotel was promoted within the region to motorists traveling the new Yellowstone Highway. The building has been in use as a hotel since its inception. Lost Springs The tiny hamlet is located on State Highway 18/20 in eastern Converse County. The community features the famous Lost Bar as well as a community center which serves as a gathering point for the area’s residents. The community has a public park open to visitors for picnicking and overnight camping. Medicine Bow National Forest The area provides a myriad of places to camp, fish, hike and backpack. The forest offers everyday sightings of deer, elk, antelope and a variety of small game, and is a popular hunting location for sportsmen. Morton Mansion This Queen Anne style home which was very popular in the 1880-1890s, shows off its “turn of the century elegance” with ornate woodwork, hardwood floors, and intricate wallpaper. The mansion has been restored and is now owned by Memorial Hospital of Converse Co. for traveling nurses, doctors, meetings & receptions. The Morton Mansion is on the National Register of Historical Places. (Not open to the public.) North Platte River 307-358-2950 Teeming with trout, public fishing areas along the river. Canoeing and float trips available. Located directly through Douglas, Wyoming. Oregon Trail Marker Off Esterbrook Rd, 10 minutes from Douglas • 307-358-2950 The trail marker and actual site of the ruts are located 10 minutes from Douglas off Esterbrook Road. Rock in the Glen Located in Glenrock area • 307-436-5652 Rock bears some of the names and traces of the 350,000 emigrants who traveled westward through this valley during the 1800’s. Thunder Basin National Grassland 2250 E Richards St, Douglas Located in northern Converse County Forest Service: 307-358-4690 The national grassland is truly a multitude use area. The grassland sprawls over 572,000 acres and offers the visitor a glimpse of the vast prairies that cover much of the west. Antelope abound on the grassland and ranchers lease grazing rights for the livestock. State Highway 59 runs through much of the grassland. World’s Largest Jackalope Sits outside the historic feature railroad passenger depot of the Douglas Railroad Interpretative Museum.
