Prior to that year, the Julian calendar, named for Julius Caesar, had held sway within Europe since its inception in 46 B.C. Both calendars add an extra day every four years. The main difference? The Gregorian calendar skips leap year three out of every four centesimal years, those that end in 00. Any year divisible by 400 receives an extra day, all other centesimal years do not. Under the Julian system, every 128 years an error of about one day would accrue. By 1582, the calendar was off by ten days.
