3 2022 106572 A R E A A T T R A C T I O N S AREA ATTRACTIONS Fort Sill National Historic Landmark Museum The Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum was established by order of the Chief of Field Artillery on December 10, 1934 and officially opened in January of 1935� A collection of historic materials had been accumulated as early as 1919 but it would be another 16 years before circumstances permitted the museum to be stood up� These early collections consisted of uniforms and flags representing the artillery, cavalry and infantry; Native American weapons, clothing and equipment; wagons, weapons and other equipment reflecting the early settlers relating to the Fort Sill area� The old guardhouse was chosen as the museum facility since its history was so important and well recognized� Today, that original building is accompanied by 35 other historic structures in the museum complex that, along with the Officer’s Family Quarters still being used for that purpose, comprise a total of 46 structures of the original frontier army fort� In 2009 the historic field artillery equipment and materials were placed into a more modern museum facility down the road from the historic post and identified as the US Army Artillery Museum� In addition, a long standing objective to create an outdoor exhibit area of the larger 20th century artillery was finally realized with the new Artillery Park across the street to the north� Meanwhile, newer exhibit galleries continued to be developed in several of the historic post buildings in the National Historic Landmark and restoration of the entire area to its 19th century appearance has continued as appropriate� Special exhibit galleries in the museum complex include the furnished 1875 cavalry barracks depicting life of the frontier soldier while in the garrison� The Warrior’s Journey gallery reflects the history of the Native Americans who fought both for and against the frontier army before finally surrendering in 1875 and beginning a new way of life on the reservation� These changes were abrupt and resulted in the near destruction of the warrior’s tradition which was vitally important to the men’s role in the tribes� This gallery also relays the story of how that tradition was regained by the men when they became an important ethnic element of the army and have continued to influence American history in ways no one ever dreamed of in the past� The guardhouse where the museum first began continues to function as the center of interpretation for the early law enforcement history of Fort Sill� Interpretation of this facility includes the role of the prison in army life, the Deputy US Marshals, the Indian Police, and the prisoners during the 19th century� The primary point of entry to the museum is in the Museum Visitor Center (B435) where visitors can spend time reviewing exhibits portraying the overall history of Fort Sill, watching films in the theater, or browsing in the Post Trader’s Store for a souvenir� Immediately to the east is the first School of Fire for Field Artillery, a little wood frame building from 1908 which was used beginning in 1911 as the first organized training facility for Field Artillery� And then there is the stone chapel at the northeast corner of the Old Post Quadrangle� Services are still held there today as they were in 1875 when it was first constructed� Visitors should check with the Museum Visitor Center, Museum’s Facebook page or the local newspaper for up to date information regarding several educational programs offered by the museum regularly throughout the year� From the annual 19th century baseball game played on the original ball diamond each October, to the living history activities of Frontier Army Days in October, and the Candlelight Stroll after dark around the Old Post Quadrangle on a midDecember evening, the visitors and participants are surrounded by the past� Museum Events at Fort Sill The Fort Sill Gun Detachment demonstrates monthly on the parade ground in front of the Museum Visitor Center or at the US Army Field Artillery Museum when not demonstrating elsewhere� Visitors are always welcome to watch the drill� The Candlelight Stroll is an annual event held in December in the National Historic Landmark Area� The program includes first-person interpretation of historic characters, and guided tours of historic quarters dating from the 1870’s� The “Stroll” also permits visitors to view the guardhouse, cavalry barracks and other historic structures by candlelight while observing interpreters in period dress explain daily activities on a 19th century army post� The Frontier Army Days is an annual event held in October in the National Historic Landmark Area� The program includes first-person interpretation of historic characters and buildings dating from the 1870’s� On hand are Buffalo Soldiers, Cavalry Soldiers, Infantry Soldiers and Artillery Soldiers as well as laundresses, surgeons, Deputy US Marshals and even a school marm showing how school was taught during the late nineteenth century� 435 Quanah Road • Fort Sill, Oklahoma 73503 • Tel. # (580) 442-5123 Admission to the Museum is free and open to the public Tuesday - Saturday from 9:00 a�m� to 5:00 p�m� except on selected holidays� Inquiries about special arrangements for tours and programs should be made by contacting the Museum Visitor Center at (580) 442-5123�
